The key objective of Planarch is to further the integration of archaeology within the spatial planning process across the whole of the partnership area and indeed across the whole of the Interreg IIIB North West European (NWE) area. It is an area steeped in history and yet one which is very vulnerable to development pressures. It is an area with a common heritage yet a heritage with strong regional diversity. It is an area where heritage is valued and yet where there is considerable potential to take forward best practice and place cultural heritage at the heart of the community.
Planarch 2 is a single project (2002 - 2006) where the partners at present address the same or similar issues but from different perspectives. By working together in a transnational partnership the work that each partner is responsible for will benefit from the experience of the others. The added value of working together will speed up the process of the development of effective management strategies across NWE, save repetition, save money in the long run and lead to closer harmonisation in approach.
The specific objectives of the Planarch 2 project are:
To work together to identify and record the common archaeological resource for NWE.
To develop in partnership ways within the spatial planning process of assessing and establishing the value of the archaeological heritage in relation to potential development proposals across NWE.
To develop in partnership ways through the spatial planning process of preserving and protecting the archaeological resource of NWE. This will involve developing strategies or master plans for selected areas to allow for sustainable development.
To promote the archaeological resource of NWE and communicate it to the community through a wide range of media including this website.
